MESSAGE FOR THE WEEK

THE POWER OF THE HOLY COMMUNION

“For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me" (1 Corinthians 11:23- 25).

In our opening verse of scripture, the Apostle Paul shares on a most important doctrine in God's Word-the Holy Communion. Understanding its significance is crucial for you as a child of God; only then will you fully appreciate and effectively appropriate its power in your life.

First and foremost, the Holy Communion is a sacrament instituted by the Lord Jesus (1 Corinthians 11:24, 25). Apostle Paul, speaking to the Corinthian Church stated, “Let me go over with you again exactly what goes on in the Lord's Supper and why it is so centrally important. I received my instructions from the Master himself and passed them on to you...” (1 Corinthians 11:23 MSG).

Secondly, through it, you demonstrate your oneness with the Lord. The word “communion” is actually translated from the Greek word “koinonia”, which also means “fellowship”.

It refers to oneness, union, partnership or participation. When you take the Communion, you express your oneness with Christ. Acknowledging this impacts on your spirit and energizes you for victory!

A third significance is that you reaffirm your faith in God's Word and proclaim the Lord's death till He comes again, just as He said in 1 Corinthians 11:26, “For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.” Showing or proclaiming the Lord's death simply means reaffirming the import and significance of His death. There are many scriptures that reveal this.

For instance in 1 Peter 2:24 , the Bible says, “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” Also, Romans 8:11 says, “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”

Whenever you take the Communion, boldly declare scriptures such as these. As you do, you're sure to experience remarkable changes in your life! That's how powerful it is!
